About the Book :

This book gives a critical account of various official and unofficial measures undertaken in the past in the direction of agrarian reforms and institutional changes in India. The special features of the book is that perhaps for the first time an attempt has been made to analyse the constraints to agrarian reforms and institutional changes in a detailed inter-regional perspective, taking various social, economic, legal and administrative factors into account, Besides, it provides up-to-date information on the nature and extent of changes in the agrarian structure of various regions. The topics covered in the book include : evolution of agrarian reforms policy; abolition of intermediaries; security for tenants-at-well ; regulation of rent; ceiling on land holdings; development of small and marginal farmers and agricultural labourers; changes in the agrarian structure; progress of agricultural research and extension; institutional arrangements for credit, marketing, irrigation and efficient use of land and other resources. The book should be of great interest and use not only to the teachers, research scholars and students of economic and other social sciences, but also to the policy makers, planners, administrators and the general public concerned with agrarian reforms and institutional changes. It may also serve as a text book of land economic and rural economics for the post-graduate students of various universities.
