About the Book :

The book discusses some crucial problems like community versus market, food, village-self sufficiency, village characteristics, growth with equity, land tenure, rural credit, decentralized planning, social economics of scheduled castes and tribes, cooperative action etc. in the perspective of rural development. The focus is on a new type of cultural revolution centred upon technological revolution that would uphold the dignity of man. A retrospective view is combined with a vision of future possibilities.


About Author :

Gobinda C. Mandal, (b. 1916) obtained M.A., doctorate and Jubilee Research Gold Medal plus Prize from the University of Calcutta. He taught economics in a few colleges under the Calcutta University and also in the Research & Training Section of the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta. In 1960 he was appointed Director (Professor) of the Agro Economics Research Centre, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan. He was appointed a Specialist of UNESCO to its "Projects of Strengthening Agricultural Training in the Philippines" during 1967-71 and a Visiting Professor in the University of Agriculture, Malaysia during 1976-77. He taught post graduate courses in economics, conducted numerous research projects, guided Ph. D. scholars as their Supervisor, attended international conferences and is author of a large number of books and articles including Technology, Growth and Welfare in Indian Agriculture . Dr. Mendal is currently associated with Elmhirst Institute of Community Studies at Santiniketan as its Honorary Professor and Consultant.
