About the Book :

Environmental Law is perceived as one of the most important tools of environmental management. Until very recently, it was a part of various civil and criminal laws specifying rights of individuals groups of people and the state over the nature (land, water, air, plants, wild life, etc.). With the emergence of environmental destruction as a major threat to human survival and development the scope of environmental law has emerged as the most important tool of promoting development without destruction. The present volume constitute a collection of papers presented and discussed at the National Symposium on Environmental Ethics organized by Sustainable Development Foundation in collaboration with Gandhi Bhavan, Delhi in 1992. It includes some of the important environmental laws of India for the ready reference of the reader. The volume aims at focusing on global environmental concerns and the Indian response as evident from legal measures attempted to meet the growing demand for economic development without sacrificing the environmental goals and objectives.

About Author :

R.B. Singh, currently a U.G.C. Research scientist (Associate professor) is a faculty member of the Department of Geography, University of Delhi. The UNESCO/ISSC (Paris) awarded 1988 Research and Study Grants Award in Social and Human Science on his Project Himalayan Highland-Lowland Interactive Systems. Dr. Singh was trained in the Geographical Information Systems Technology in the field of Environment under Training Programme of the UNEP/UNITAR in Switzerland. He has visited and lectured at several universities abroad under scientific exchange programme and participated in International Seminars in over two dozen countries. He specializes in Environmental studies, Remote Sensing, GIS Tech. and Regional Development, and has to his credit six research volumes and a large number of research papers published in national and international journals. Presently, he is working on two prestigious projects sponsored by UGC and Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.

Suresh Misra a well-known expert on consumer issues is currently Professor (Consumer Affairs) and Coordinator, Centre for Consumer Studies, a Think Tank and Knowledge Partner of the Department of Consumer Affairs, GoI at the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. He holds his Master's in Political Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Masters in Human Resource Management from Pondicherry Central University, D.Phil. from Allahabad Central University and Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from Calcutta. He had his advance training in Corporate Governance at AOTS, Tokyo, Japan; in Total Quality Management at UK Civil Service College, Sunningdale, UK; and in Public Policy Management at Development Study Centre, Rehovot, Israel. He participated in the Public Administration programme for senior officers at ENA, Paris, France and also attended advance Training of Trainers programme on Training Techniques and Methodology at Thames Valley University, Slough, UK. Prof. Misra has been associated with consumer studies for the last twenty-five years and carried out a number of research and evaluation studies sponsored by national and international agencies. Prof. Misra is a member of the Central Consumer Protection Council, GoI. He is the Project Director of the National Consumer Helpline and the State Consumer Knowledge Resource Management Portal set-up by the Department of Consumer Affairs, GoI at IIPA.
