This book attempts to examine the various dimensions of development caused displacement in West Bengal under the Left Front Government. Centring around land acquisition by the government for industrial projects and its adverse impacts on the peasants, it makes an in-depth study of the policy dimensions of land acquisition and its administrative procedures. Besides describing the socio-economic and political consequences of land acquisition, it documents the resistance and bargains carried out by the people. Finally, it makes an overall evaluation of the emphasis of the development policy of the Left Front Government in West Bengal.


About Author :

Abhijit Guha (b. 1956) is Reader in Anthropology at Vidyasagar University. He earned his Masters and M.Phil degrees from Calcutta University and Ph.D. from Vidyasagar University. He is engaged in displacement, resettlement and rehabilitation research for the last 11 years and has worked with Walter Fernandes in a project on West Bengal. He is also associated with the post-graduate diploma course on Participatory Management of Resettlement and Rehabilitation at the School of Social Sciences, IGNOU, New Delhi. He was visiting fellow at the Department of Sociology, Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University during August-September 2006 and also taught at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata. Dr. Guha has published over 60 research papers, book reviews and comments in various national and international journals of repute which include Current Anthropology, Population and Development Review and Economic and Political Weekly. Also, he has presented papers at many conferences and seminars in India and abroad.
