About the Book :

The book is an outcome of a National Seminar on "Globalisation, Markets and the Rural Consumers" organised by the Centre for Consumer Studies, Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. The seminar was sponsored by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India. The book contains twenty two chapters written by eminent experts working in the area of consumer protection and welfare and is divided into four sections, each focusing on a specific theme. They analyse the rural scenairo, the status of the rural consumers, the lack of safety mechanisms and the ways and means to empower them. Various strategies and policy interventions have been suggested by the authors to address the problems faced by the rural consumers.

The book is useful to academicians, researchers, consumer activists, policy-makers and all those interested in promoting the consumer movement in the country.


About Author :


Suresh Misra a well-known expert on consumer issues is currently Professor (Consumer Affairs) and Coordinator, Centre for Consumer Studies, a Think Tank and Knowledge Partner of the Department of Consumer Affairs, GoI at the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. He holds his Master's in Political Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Masters in Human Resource Management from Pondicherry Central University, D.Phil. from Allahabad Central University and Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from Calcutta. He had his advance training in Corporate Governance at AOTS, Tokyo, Japan; in Total Quality Management at UK Civil Service College, Sunningdale, UK; and in Public Policy Management at Development Study Centre, Rehovot, Israel. He participated in the Public Administration programme for senior officers at ENA, Paris, France and also attended advance Training of Trainers programme on Training Techniques and Methodology at Thames Valley University, Slough, UK. Prof. Misra has been associated with consumer studies for the last twenty-five years and carried out a number of research and evaluation studies sponsored by national and international agencies. Prof. Misra is a member of the Central Consumer Protection Council, GoI. He is the Project Director of the National Consumer Helpline and the State Consumer Knowledge Resource Management Portal set-up by the Department of Consumer Affairs, GoI at IIPA.

Mamta Pathania holds her Masters, M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Public Administration from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. Currently, she is working as Assistant Professor, Consumer Studies at IIPA. Before joining IIPA, she worked with the Department of Public Administration, H.P.U., Shimla and later on with the Department of Public Administration, Regional Centre (H.P.U.), Dharamshala, (H.P.) as a Lecturer in Public Administration. She has authored/edited 8 books and contributed several papers in journers and books of repute. Her major areas of interent include Consumer Studies, Good Governance, Public Sector Reforms and Local Governance. She is a member of the Script Committee of the Department of Consumer Affairs and a Member of the National COPOLCO Mirror Committee of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
